This is a large antique school sampler. An English, needlepoint pupil’s embroidery display with political poster to verso, dating to the Victorian period, circa 1880.

The fascinating reverse shows an original 1883 political poster, used as a backing material a few year’s after the sampler’s completion. The franchise demonstration displayed occurred in the North East of England in October 1883 and was one of several nationwide demonstrations that were a precursor to the Third Reform Act (1884) and its partial inclusion of ‘One Man, One Vote’ which was a step along the road to all men and women having a democratic right to vote in the United Kingdom.
