Delightful sampler with a fascinating Victorian period poster to reverse
Displays a desirable aged patina within a later, quality frame

Dressed to the rear with hanging wire for ease of mounting
Embroidered alphabet in block letters and cursive, with numbers below
Embroidered by an Anne Bell at 11 years old in 1879

Glazed rear display’s the 1883 political demonstration poster
The fascinating reverse shows an original 1883 political poster, used as a backing material a few year’s after the sampler’s completion. The franchise demonstration displayed occurred in the North East of England in October 1883 and was one of several nationwide demonstrations that were a precursor to the Third Reform Act (1884) and its partial inclusion of ‘One Man, One Vote’ which was a step along the road to all men and women having a democratic right to vote in the United Kingdom.
This is a fascinating antique school sampler, enhanced by the visible demonstration poster to the reverse. A charming social and political history record of the Victorian period, delivered ready to display.
