Vintage Design
Estimate to be late 19th to turn of 20th century.
Frame has typical nature inspired Art Nouveau decoration.
Hand painted and then lacquered over.
A pond to the bottom with Mandarin ducks on it.
Flowers and foliage up both sides.
And a Kingfisher bird in flight on the top.
Each corner is chamfered with a brass nailed edge.
There is also a brass strip diagonally laid to cover the frame joins.
Ornate brass hanger at the top.
Backed with hardboard which is covered in chinese writing paper.
Which has caused some confusion as it gives a hint to chinoisorie.
Especially as the ducks are Mandarins and the flora is exotic.
As the photos show, there is a tiny nick to the top of the frame.
So small that I didn’t notice it when purchasing and only found it whilst cleaning it.
This really is a unique piece.
And was very hard to investigate as there is nothing out there on the web which comes even close.
Would look stunning in any home, restaurant or retail environment.
So get it now before it’s gone!
