This rug with a light blue united field and cascades of flowers on the sides is part of the Nichols rug type. Walter Nichols, an American entrepreneur, was a pioneer in bringing high-quality rug production to China during the interwar period. Nichols established a rug factory in Tianjin, China, and began producing Oriental-style rugs with unique, high-quality designs. Walter Nichols’ rugs were distinguished by their intricate floral patterns, vibrant colors and finely crafted details. These rugs became very popular in the United States and Europe, where they were appreciated for their beauty and craftsmanship. Nichols rugs made in China represent an important chapter in the history of Oriental rugs and are still considered true works of textile art.
